ABILENE, Texas — Lines started forming early Monday morning at auto repair shops, as thousands of cars in Abilene got hammered with hail. Reports ranged from pea to softball sized hail—that’s nearly 4 inches in diameter.
Abilene fireman J. Sanders assessed the damage Monday morning after severe weather tore through town Sunday night dropping base ball sized hail at station two. He had hail damage to the station’s SUV, including a cracked window, cracked paint, several large dents and it even hit the GPS antenna. “I parked it under a mesquite tree,” said Sander, “but the tree is half gone.”
Wade Keeling can hardly see out of his truck as spider-like broken glass covers the drivers side, “If it (the hail) hit the front it would just shatter but the safety glass kept it from busting in. But if the hail hit the back, like all those cars, it explodes.”
When we talked to Keeling Monday, he had already been waiting 4 hours to get it fixed with no guarantee he would be seen, “It’s very frustrating.”
Abilene Auto Glass, one of many repair shops in town, estimates they’ll fix more than 400 cars this week alone.
Then there are the car dealerships around town.
McGavock’s Nissan told us more than 200 cars were damaged. Other dealerships were surveying the storms handiwork Monday.
